This unique artwork by Richard Proctor is part of a series of 3 (see last pictures and other listings). It is a self-portrait repeated 3 times in different colours.
It has been created by interweaving different coloured strips of fabric in order to create a complex composition with depth and texture then he painted over to make the facial details (like the hair). That's what I am thinking since this process seems very mysterious to me.
Weaving is one of the most ancient forms of creativity and design, and the artist used it here to convey a powerful statement of duality confronting himself to his creative outlet.

Richard M. Proctor was born in Detroit, Michigan in 1936, and after graduating from Michigan State University with an M.A. in Painting, he spent most of his life in the Northwest. Along with teaching art and textile design at the University of Washington, Proctor operated the Childers/Proctor Gallery in Langley, Washington with fellow artist and long-time partner, Ron Childers. He was an Associate Professor Emeritus at the University. Proctor has also been a docent at the Palm Springs Art Museum in California since 2001.
Along with being an accomplished painter, printmaker, and ceramicist, Proctor was also an author. He wrote two books, Principles of Pattern Design and Surface Design for Fabric. Proctor was splitting his time between California and Washington and was creating art.
